Job Description:

This position is located on the Soil Research Branch of the National Soil Survey Center (NSSC), Lincoln, Nebraska. The NSSC provides national leadership to NRCS’s soils program and the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) Program. The incumbent performs research that explores models, predictions and statistical relationships among soil hydrology, soil properties, soil landscapes and soil behavior.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Uses advanced analytical techniques to assess soil moisture dynamics.
  • Communicates results and findings of research in refereed publications and technical guidance.
  • Transfers information and improves the soil survey program through training, guidance documents and interactions with National Leaders and their staffs.
  • Works within a team concept to develop and implement ways to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of the products and services provided to internal and external customers.
  • Performs duties in a manner supportive of a safe and healthy working environment, exercises safety precautions when exposed to dangerous objects, chemicals, extreme temperatures, etc.
  • Designs and conducts research projects in support of the NRCS mission and SPSD goals and milestones.
  • Develops, integrates, and evaluates soil hydrology, soil moisture monitoring, soil climate and related research topics in support of soil survey, ecological sites and other SPSD priorities.

Job Requirements:

  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Subject to one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period unless prior service is creditable. New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required training program before the end of their probationary period.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license for the type of vehicle(s) operated to perform the duties of this position.
  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
