As the Category Director, Merchandising, you will lead a team of 6+ and create a climate where your team is motivated to do their best, encouraged to speak up, and provide the support they need to help them reach their full potential. With your strategic vision, you will translate future possibilities into breakthrough strategies for your category and achieve financial goals including sales, gross margin, weeks of supply, and stock turnover. You are a creative thinker and a product lover who will take calculated risks and source and foster new opportunities to grow the business.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Communicate brand training needs to brands and the Education team
  • Manage fixture/planogram planning and implementation with internal partners
  • Plan promotions, launches, animations, and marketing activities with internal partners
  • Develop and execute the overall strategy for growth, including new brand selection, product introductions, and strategic expansion of current brands.
  • Communicate brand and business opportunities to stores and cross-functional teams. Present strategy and insights for the category to brands at the annual Brand Summit.
  • Develop and coach the team
  • Develop and manage brand relationships, terms negotiations, including margin, testers/damages, training support, co-op, Return to Vendors (RTVs), samples
  • Source and develop new brands that fill an important need gap within the category
  • Analyze and manage all elements of a category to identify areas of opportunity
  • Ensure brand activation calendars are created and actioned
  • Interpret and communicate management direction to team members within the business unit to ensure that each initiative is developed within the desired timeline
  • Lead and/or participate in cross-functional projects
  • Manage brand fill rate and P.O. fulfillment with the Planning team
  • Plan promotions, launches, animations, marketing campaigns for brands within category strategy. Lead the assortment planning and strategy for category merchandising led promos.
  • Foster an engaged work environment that embodies the Sephora values
  • Identify the channel for brand distribution (.ca or Omni)
  • Develop and manage accurate assortments

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to focus on the big picture – thinking ahead and developing plans to achieve business results
  • Demonstrated experience as a change agent, with the ability to influence key stakeholders both within and outside of the organization.
  • 10+ years of experience in retail buying, merchandising, and/or planning, with 5+ years managing and leading teams
  • Proven ability to develop category/brand strategies
  • Technical skills – MS Office; merchant systems
  • University degree—an MBA is a plus
  • Lead-by-example, results-oriented, and proven ability to take a leadership position, executing plans by leveraging their team and resources
  • Ability to travel
  • A strong track record of building organizational relationships cross-functionally with the courage and willingness to challenge others to develop breakthrough solutions
  • Experience in the beauty industry or a keen passion for cosmetics is a bonus
